What makes a good Student Video?

What makes a good Student Video?

The main thing that makes a student music good is making it look like a professional one. For instance, when shooting the video, you need to find locations that could appear in professional music videos.

On the other hand, however, you shouldn't be too unrealistic with how the video will turn out - don't plan to attempt things that would be too difficult to complete in the time allotted, for example.

Key elements that makes a good music video;

Planning- Planning is key to make a successful student film as it helps to sequence the video and for the students making the video to know where they are at with the video. If it comes to a point where you have no idea about how to make it original, don't do the video. By improvising the video rather than planning what’s next, the video could look unprofessional and could ruin the whole music video. If you are completely prepared with a plan and concept for a music video, it will make the whole music video look good and will be easier to make.

Wide range of shots- When filming a music video, it is best to film a wide range of shots while filming otherwise you'll end up repeating the same shots again and again, leading to the film being a boring. when filming, shoot plenty of material at different angles, so that when it comes to editing there are many different shots to pick from. It's better to have too much footage than too little, as shots you have filmed can be deleted.

Locations- When filming, choosing a variety of locations and also the right locations allows a music video to be more visually pleasing and doesn't make the video boring and the audience being disinterested.

Innovate- Whatever a music video is about or the budget that the idea has, there’s always a need to give the audience something they haven’t seen before. By creating something that hasn't been done before, it makes the overall idea memorable to an audience. This would make a good music video as the idea wouldn't have before, so people are more likely to enjoy the video and also like it more than a copied version of another music video.

How this will help me when making my music video;
When it comes to making my music video, this will help me as I can include these key aspects to my video, to make it look professional and also attract my target audience. If I wasn't to include these things. the video, I won’t be able to be the best it could be if I was to include and use them.

Student Music video Analysis 1

Student Music video Analysis 1- "Stuck" (A Grade);

Genre;
The genre of the song and video is electronic indie pop, which is also the genre of the artist.
 The music video has a fairly typical, straightforward narrative where by a boy and his friends assault another boy and then the main character (the lead singer), feels guilty about the incident.
The theme of guilt is expected in this video due to the lyrics of the song. For example, the lyric "repeating all the same mistake", shows that the assaulter is repeating his actions and felling guilty.
There are no inter textual references in this music video.
Technical/ Visual Codes;
The video is set in the following locations:
·         A field
·         A gym
·         A dark room
·         A fire pit
·         A road
·         An alley
·         A bedroom
Many of the shots in this video (the shots of before and after the incident) have been coloured to be very grey. This connotes the lead singer's guilt as he is blocking it out and trying to forget what happened.

The framing of some of the lip syncing shots such as the one above puts the singer directly in the middle, making it clear that he is important and making him stand out against the plain background.

The body language of the singer in the following shot shows that he is overwhelmed by his guilt, as it is hard for him to cope with it after repetitively assaulting other character.

 During the scene were the other character is being assaulted, the camera shots are very shaky. This helps to connote the frantic mood of the situation and shows that the character is helpless and defenceless. The movement of the camera in the assault scene helps to connote the fear of the boy.

Narrative;
The story line of this music video is that a boy and his friends assault a classmate and the main character feels guilty about the incident.

There is a strong theme of guilt, as he knows he has done wrong.

The video mostly incorporates Todorov's narrative structure:
  • Equilibrium - at the beginning where the main character is sitting in a field with his friend
  • Disruption - the assault
  • Recognition - he feels guilty
  • Attempt to repair - he apologises
  • The new equilibrium is not reached as he is not forgiven by the boy.
Audience;
The target audience for this music video would be teenagers, between 13-19 in BCD demographics. This is shown by the behaviour of the characters in the video, which is also stereotypical of this demographic. As well as this, the charters within the video are of the similar age range to the age of the target audience, which may make the audience potentially relate to the music video is some way.
Representations;
Males are represented very stereo typically in this video, as they are seen to need to establish their dominance over other people. However, the main character breaks the male stereotype as he is seen crying in some of the shots, which is stereo typically seen as a feminine thing to do.

How will this help me with my music video?
Analysing this music video will help when creating our own, as the shot compositions are very well thought-out and they are appealing to the audience. Therefore, we will make sure to pay attention to the framing and timing of our shots to ensure that the viewer remains interested in the music video.

Why were re-making a music video

Why were re-making a music video;

We have chosen to re make Justin Timber lakes "Cant stop the feeling" for one of tasks. We chose to remake a music video because it gave us the ability make a current music video so that we could practice different elements within a music video such as different shots, lip syncing etc. By doing this, this would help us with our own music videos as we can see what makes an effective shot and also what shots wouldn't work. As well as this, we were able to see what techniques we need to use to make the lip syncing within our music video look professional and also effective/ realistic.

Mock Magazine Advert

Creating our magazine advert;

One of our tasks was to create a mock magazine advert for a made up band or artist, which in our groups case ended being the band Luna Chicks. When creating the advert, we wanted to take into consideration all of the elements of the advert which would be stereotypical of a girl pop band such as the genre that the bands songs are and also the overall stereotype of a pop girl band like this. We chose to use the colour pink for the bands name as pink is stereo-typically associated with females and also was used so that the name stood out. The font used throughout the poster ties in with the Luna Chicks image well as it not only links to the overall band but also links with the title of the album "Girls will be girls" with the girls in the band being quite 'bad'. we also considered the distributions companies at the bottom of the advertisement, as we wanted out band to be associated with well known distribution companies such as Spotify and Apple, which would be able to make the album available to a wider audience.

What people thought of the advert;

After showing our magazine advert to a number of people, we had similar feedback overall. to start off with people thought that the magazine advert tied in well with the girl pop band genre because of the colours, image of the band also the font of the text within the advert. however a few of the people thought that a few more elements could have been added to the advert to make the advert more appealing and less boring, which i agree with entirely.

What i learnt from this;

Overall from this task, i learnt the key aspects and elements that are needed to be included to make a professional magazine advert when i comes to making my own fro my own choice of band. From this i can see that next time it comes to making a magazine advert, i will need to add more element into the advert to make the advert more appealing, which could easily be done by spending more time on the advert rather than the 2 lessons we had to complate this mock advert.

Mock Digipak

Creating our Mock Digipak;

One of our tasks was to create a mock Digipak which consists on a making what goes inside a CD case and also the cover from scratch, creating for an imaginary band, which in this case was a folk band called the "Hobgoblins". when creating this Digipak, we had to take into consideration the generic conventions of a typical Digipak that a professional artists would use for their CD release. When creating our Digipak, we thought a lot about the main image that would first be seen by people when they look at the Digipak. This is why we chose to go with a stereotypical folk man playing his guitar as the front cover image, as this is what stereo typically would be seen within this genre. We also included the songs that are in the album and added a graphic design to the CD it self. We done this so that the Digipak is more visually appealing to the person viewing it, making them more likely to listen tot he CD.

What people thought of the advert;

After showing our Mock Digipak to a number of people, we had similar feedback overall. Also all of the people we asked liked the lined paper background and also the graphic on the front, as they thought this tied into the Folk genre very well. However, a few of the people thought that a few more images or elements could be added to the Digipak to make it look more professional and make it more appealing to the target audience. These comments are fair and I agree with them entirely and could easily be amended by spending more time on the Digipak.

What I learnt from this;

Overall from this task, I learnt the key aspects and elements that are needed to be included to make a professional Digipak when I come to make my own for my own choice of band. From this I can see that I need to put more elements and detail into the Digipak, so that it will look more visually appealing and also make the overall piece look create for the desired genre I chose.

This is the front cover and also the back of the Digipak.
The back of the CD cover will include the songs
on the album .

This is the inside of the Digipak, which includes the CD
with a illustrated guitar design imprinted onto it.

Authophila by Bluetones

Authophila by Bluetones;

One of our tasks was to pitch an idea on what we thought the messages and also what the song "Autophilia" by the Bluetones was about from only listen to the song. we were unaware of the songs title and also the music video itself, so we had to rely on the songs lyrics to help us figure out what the song was about and what the messages of the song were.

How will this help me when making my music video?
When it comes to making my music video, this analysis will help me as it shows me that the lyrics and the tune to the song can be a lot different to the actual visuals of the music video. This means when making my music video, the visuals doesn’t always have to relate to the lyrics.
