Whole Music Video Analysis 3;

Coldplay- The Scientist Analysis

What is the Genre of the video?

Is there a typical narrative?

A man and women's relationship and the man wanting to go back to the start of their relationship
What is expected in the video?

Some variation of a split between them or breakup
What is unexpected in the video?

How the two were separated (By the car crash towards the end).

Narrative;
What is the story line of the video?
A man seen to be going back through time and then going back before the crash him and his partner had just had.
Is there a theme?
Love and Separation.
Is there a recognisable structure (TODOROV- Equilibrium 5 stages)?

As the music video is in reverse the structure of the overall video is very confusing as the stages happen in a backwards order.
Are there recognisable characters?

The lead singer/ main character and female character seen very briefly towards the end.
How does the video reflect the lyrics?
Throughout the video, there is no link between visuals and lyrics until towards the end where the main character says "I'm going back to the start" then gets into the car.

Where is the video set? Connotations of this setting?

The video is seen to be set somewhere in London or another built up city within the UK, with also a forest setting included as well.
Dominant colour used ion the video? Why? What is the effect?
There are no dominant colours used within the music video. Only really naturalist colures are used.

There no Iconography or Typography within music video.

High angled shot- Shows artist laying on mattress.
Mid-shot - Artist on the train tracks.

What issues of representations are evident?
There is no evident issues of representation within the video.
How have these been represented? Stereotypes?

As these stereotypes aren't evident, they haven't been represented in any way.
Look at the artist as a star- how have they been constructed?

The character has been constructed identical to the artist real identity, but there is no elements of his construction that gives an indication of being a star, only the screen time given to him.
Do they have an anonymous role in the video or are they there as celebrity?
There is no anonymous role that the artist plays within the video or showing that the character is a celebrity.

Camera angles? Interesting ones? What effect is created?

The use of panning and also high angled shots to make the artist look vulnerable at that point.
Does the way the camera moves help to tell the story?
Throughout the video, the camera follows the artist through the streets of London using a variety of different shots.
What is the editing like? Type of cuts etc.?
The editing within the video is quite slow paced, which goes with the tempo of the overall video. Also the cuts within the video are also quite slow, which again connects with the tempo of the piece.

Who is the target audience for the video? How does the video target this specific audience?
There is no specific target audience for this music video as theme of the video can target and also relate to a number of different target audiences.

All Social Classes.

Institution;
What role does the record company play in the music video?

Throughout the entire music video, the record company Parlophone isn't shown and doesn't seem to play a significant part within the video.
What is the brand image of the star is sold? How is the star marketed and promoted?
There is no real brand image of the artist within the video. The artist within the video is only promoted through the screen time as the artist himself is well known and promotes himself.

How will this help me with my music video?
This analysis of professional music video will help me as it first will aid me in coming up with ideas for my own music video as well as seeing what needs to be included to produce an effect music video.
