Music Video Analysis based on Goodwin's Theory

ColdPlay "Paradise" Analysis;

The genre is clearly shown through characteristics that are stereotypical to the Pop/rock genre such as the high key lighting, upbeat rhythm, catchy bass lines and choruses. Another characteristics is the typical band instruments that are used within the video that indicates it’s a Pop Rock genre.

There is a very strong relationship between the lyrics and the music video, especially at the beginning of the music video. This is first shown when the elephant has escaped the guards from the zoo and begins to hold up boards with the lyrics within the video.

There is also a relationship between the lyrics and the visual within the music video. This is shown throughout the chorus of the song when “Paradise” is sung and the setting of the video changes to what the elephants think a paradise place is shown with them in.

Throughout the music video, there are a variety of close-ups of the elephant characters but these don't show the identity of band as they are dressed up. Even towards the end with the live performances of the artists, the band members are still wearing the elephant heads, showing that the record company hasn't specified that the band need a certain number of close-ups within the music video.

Within this music video, there is no examples of voyeurism at all as there are no females that involved with the music video.

In term of intertextual references, there appeal to be no examples of this throughout the whole of the music video as it doesn't references anything from any other media pieces from my view.

How will this help me when making my own music video?

After analysing this music video based on Goodwin's theory, this overall task will certainly help me when it comes to making my own music video. this is because I can pick out the key conventions  that professional music videos use according to Goodwin's theory and then use them in my own music video. this will then make my video look a lot more appealing and also professional.
